Applications are invited from suitable candidates for the position of a Junior Research Fellow (JRF) to work on a research project sponsored by DST-SERB Core Research Grant
(CRG/2022/000513).

Job Title: Junior Research Fellow

Project Title: An ultra structural study on the development of rice silica cells at
micro- and nano-scale

Duration of the project and fellowship amount: Duration of the project is for three years.

Fellowship will be paid at Rs 31,000 per month for 1st and 2nd year and Rs. 35,000 per month for 3rd year. House rent allowance @16% may also be provided post approval by the funding agency.

Essential Qualifications for JRF (one position): Candidates should have passed their
M.Sc./M.Tech/M.Pharm./M.V.Sc or equivalent qualification in Life Sciences or allied
subjects (Biochemistry/Biotechnology/ Bioinformatics/Microbiology etc.) with a minimum
of 60% marks (or equivalent grade point). Candidates should have qualified national level


examination such as NET LS/GATE/GPAT/BET. The duration of fellowship will be for one
year followed by extension of another two years subject to the availability of fund.
Desirable Qualifications: Experience of working on plants/light microscopy/laser scanning
confocal microscopy/scanning electron microscopy etc

Age Limit: The age of the applicant should be below 28 years as on 21st April, 2023. Age
relaxation will be given to the candidates as per Govt. of India rules.

program at School of Biotechnology, KIIT Deemed to be University as per Institute norms.

  1. What inspired you to apply for this JRF position, and why are you interested in working on this research project?

Answer: I have always been fascinated by plant biology and the development of specialized structures that enable plants to adapt to their environment. This research project on the ultrastructural study of rice silica cells at the micro- and nano-scale aligns with my research interests and will provide me with an opportunity to gain hands-on experience with advanced imaging techniques such as laser scanning confocal microscopy and scanning electron microscopy.

2. Can you describe your research experience in plants, microscopy, and imaging techniques?

Answer: During my M.Sc. in Life Sciences, I worked on a project that involved investigating the effect of abiotic stress on the growth and development of tomato plants using light microscopy and biochemical assays. I also have experience in working with laser scanning confocal microscopy and have analyzed the subcellular localization of proteins in Arabidopsis thaliana using this technique.

3. How will your previous research experience and qualifications help you in this project?

Answer: My previous research experience has provided me with a strong foundation in plant biology and imaging techniques that are relevant to this project. Additionally, my qualifications in Life Sciences and my qualification in NET LS have provided me with a strong theoretical background in the subject area that I can apply to this project.

4. What are some of the challenges that you anticipate while working on this project?

Answer: One of the main challenges that I anticipate while working on this project is optimizing the sample preparation protocols to obtain high-quality images for analysis. Another challenge could be dealing with the large datasets generated from imaging studies and analyzing them effectively.

5. Can you describe your long-term career goals, and how will this project help you achieve them?

Answer: My long-term career goal is to become a researcher in the field of plant biology, and this project aligns with my career aspirations. Through this project, I will gain valuable experience in advanced imaging techniques and will be able to contribute to the understanding of the development of rice silica cells at the micro- and nano-scale. This project will also provide me with an opportunity to publish research articles in peer-reviewed journals, which will be an essential step towards achieving my long-term career goals.
