IBM Breakthrough Battery Discovery

IBM Breakthrough Battery Discovery – No More Lithium-Ion Batteries.

IBM Research, under materials science, announced its breakthrough in battery discovery. This discovery could potentially obsolete the production of lithium-ion batteries as this new battery is reported to outperform existing batteries and is free of heavy metals. This breakthrough in its new battery technology, the battery can charge real quick, with low flammability and free of heavy metals making it an environmentally friendly alternative to the existing battery technology.

For a long time in modern technology, lithium-ion batteries have been one of the most frustrating parts. Lithium-ion batteries charge slowly, go bad, horrible for the environment and are prone to exploding. IBM’s new battery eliminates all these factors.

IBM is yet to reveal complete information regarding how its new battery is made. They have only mentioned that the new battery is made of “three new and different proprietary materials, which have never before been recorded as being combined in a battery.”

IBM said that all three components can be extracted from seawater. This means that there is no environmental damage, no mining heavy metals, and lesser humanitarian cost. The extraction of battery components from seawater reduces the costs thus making the

battery more affordable and much better for the people and the environment.

Current technology and the new IBM battery:

IBM’s new battery is not just environmentally friendly, IBM’s tests have proved to surpass the lithium-ion batteries capabilities in many individual categories including quicker charging, lower costs, higher energy density and power, low flammability and strong energy efficiency.

In this breakthrough battery discovery, one of the standouts in the report is the mention of faster charging time: In just five minutes, it can reportedly reach an 80% charge without any discharge capacity’s compromising.

IBM said, along with this recharge rate, many other improvements in the performance include:

  • It can reach more than 10,000 watts per liter power density.
  • It can reach more than 800-watt hours per liter energy density when compared with modern lithium-ion batteries.
  • It has over 90% energy efficiency.

The battery is ideal for multiple use cases ranging from electric vehicles to new energy infrastructure as the battery has the ability to be configured in many different ways.

IBM has not revealed if this new battery technology has passed the testing phase, its blog post spoke about this breakthrough battery discovery promisingly about replacing the lithium-ion batteries having several potential applications.

When you are frequently affected by today’s batterie’s poor life, then it is probably easy to get excited about new breakthroughs in battery technology. However, do not go ahead of yourself: Though IBM sounds optimistic about its battery technology breakthrough in its blog, it is not sure until it is officially confirmed.
