Students-Undergraduate Research Graduate Excellence (SURGE) program
is an internship Program of IIT Kanpur, which runs under the aegis of Centre for Continuing Education (CCE), IIT Kanpur. SURGE program was launched and inaugurated on 8th May 2006 by Professor Sanjay G. Dhande, the then Director, IIT Kanpur.
The objective of SURGE Program is to develop the agenda of undergraduate research and promotes the culture of research and interdisciplinary education among the new generation. In the spirit of the same, this program is an evidence of the close student-faculty collaboration opportunities for hands on experience and quest for new knowledge that characterize IITK education. Since inception, this program has strengthened year by year, providing more and more research opportunities to young scholars. .
The program provides an opportunity to undergraduates and M.Sc first year students of IITK, Non-IITK and also to the students of SAARC countries, for experiencin
g technical learning in their field of research. The duration of the program is approximately 08 weeks. The program tentatively commences in the 2nd week of May and concludes in the 2nd week of July, every year..This programme has proved to be a highly interesting and stimulating event among all the students since its inception. It had provided a platform to students for their innovative ideas and has also given space for the practical implementation of the same. It is worth mentioning here that a few of the research works undertaken by the students during this summer program got recognition and space for publications in the international journals and conferences. As a resultant, the Program had influenced and motivated the SURGE participants for pursuing research as their career option.
To motivate and inculcate the competition among the participants, SURGE provides awards to its participants under various categories viz; “Dr. Elizabeth and Dr. Verkey Cherian Award for Best Poster and Best Project”, “Best Project Award for Engineering” and “Best Project Award for Sciences”.
SURGE for SAARC Countries
The SURGE program is opened to UG students from SAARC countries (NEPAL & BHUTAN). Under this category, a maximum of 04 students from SAARC countries are allowed to participate in the SURGE program for the upcoming summer of 2024 internship. The students selected under this category are eligible for a scholarship of Rs. 12,500/-. Administrative charges and travel expenses (upto Rs. 10,000/- (maximum) or as per actual) are also reimbursed. The details will be available from February 6, 2024 (tentatively).
The eligibility criteria for SAARC countries students at the time of starting of internship are mentioned below:
(i) B.Tech/BE/B-Arch/BS (3rd year completed),
(ii) Five year degree program (3rd year completed, 4th year completed)
(iii) B.Sc/B.A. (2nd year completed)
(iv) M.Sc. 2-Year (1st year completed)
Interested students with CPI >= 6 need to complete the online registration form.
The students are advised to keep ready the following, before filling the online application form;
1. Recent Passport size photograph in .jpg format not more than 1MB.
2. A single file in .pdf format not more than 3 MB containing
(i) Research Proposal not more than 500 words.
(ii)Current Transcript.
3. A single file in .pdf format not more than 1 MB containing a Recommendation Letter – I of any faculty who belongs to the applicant’ institute.
4. A single file in .pdf format not more than 1 MB containing Recommendation Letter – II of any faculty who belongs to the applicant’ institute.
SURGE for Non-IITK Indian Students:
Under this program, Non-IITK Indian students with CPI >= 6 are eligible to apply for summer internship at IIT Kanpur.
The eligibility criteria for Non-IITK students at the time of starting of internship are mentioned below:
(i) B.Tech/BE/B-Arch/BS (3rd year completed),
(ii) Five year degree program (3rd year completed, 4th year completed)
(iii) B.Sc/B.A. (2nd year completed)
(iv) M.Sc. 2-Year (1st year completed)
Interested students need to complete the online registration form.
The students are advised to keep ready the following, before filling the online application form;.
1. Recent Passport size photograph in .jpg format not more than 1MB.
2. A single file in .pdf format not more than 3 MB containing
(i) Research Proposal not more than 500 words.
(ii) Current Transcript.
3. A single file in .pdf format not more than 1 MB containing Recommendation Letter one of any faculty who belongs to the applicant’ institute.
4. A single file in .pdf format not more than 1 MB containing Recommendation Letter two of any faculty who belongs to the applicant’ institute.
Note: There is no fixed format for the recomendation letter under this category but the recomendation letter should be on the applicants’ Iinstitute letter head or of the respective faculty member’s letter head duly rsigned by the concerned faculty member who is familiar with your academic work. Surge Office will directly contact the recommenders for verification of recommendation letters.
SURGE for IIT Kanpur (IITK) students:
Under this program, IITK students with CPI >= 5.5 are given an opportunity to work with a chosen mentor at IITK. In order to complete the application, it is necessary for the student to identify an IITK Faculty who is willing to be his/her mentor during the summer internship, and a suitable project to pursue for the 08 weeks in summer.
The eligibility criteria for IITK students at the time of starting of internship are:
(i) B.Tech/BS (2nd,3rd year completed),
(ii) Dual Degree (2nd, 3rd, 4th year),
(iii) M.Sc. 2-Year (1st year)
Interested students need to complete the online registration form.
The students are advised to keep ready the following, before filling the online application form;
1. Recent Passport size photograph in .jpg format not more than 1MB.
2. A single file in .pdf format not more than 3 MB containing
(i) Research Proposal not more than 500 words.
(ii) Current Transcript.
(iii) One signed letter of Mentor Certification from Professor as per the format given in the attached link. Certificate from Mentor.
NOTE: (a) Letter of Recommendation (LOR) is not required for IITK participants, however, the name of two potential referees (IITK Faculty) is to be mentioned mandatorily in the application form, which may be verified as and when required.
(b) IITK participants are not permitted to undertake SUMMER COURSE and SURGE-2024 PROJECT simultaneously. However, an exception for those participants whose CPI is >=8.5 are permitted to undertake one SUMMER COURSE along with SURGE-2024 PROJECT.
Funding for SURGE Candidates;
The following financial supports are provided to the eligible SURGE participants;
- Funding from SURGE (Institute Funded Category): Students selected under this category may receive a stipend of Rs 12,500/- (administrative charges reimbursed) during the program duration. Candidates with CPI>=8.5 (at the time of registration) will be eligible for consideration of Institute Funding.
- Funding from IITK Project (Project Funded Category): Students selected under this category may receive funding directly from the faculty members (mentors) of IIT Kanpur.
- Self Funded: Students selected under this category will have an opportunity to work on projects of faculty members of IIT Kanpur, however, they will not be entittled for any funding.
- Funding for SAARC participants: The students selected under this category are eligible for scholarship of Rs. 12,500/-. Administrative charges and travel expenses (upto Rs. 10,000/- (maximum) or as per actual) are also reimbursed.
- Industry-IITK tie-up, if any: Students selected under this category will have an opportunity to work as individuals or in teams, on real-world projects proposed by the industry with mentors from both IIT Kanpur and the industry. The stipend will be paid by the industry. In SURGE-2023, only IIT Kanpur students can participate under this category.
How to Apply:

- Online Registration is available from March 18, 2024 to March 28, 2024 for all the categories of students applying for internship.
- Please follow the steps below, for your Registration for SURGE-2024:. NOTE: Incomplete applications will not be entertained in any case.
PHASE-I:
Step-1: Register for SURGE 2024
(i) Register through the online portal LINK: LINK
(ii) There are three categories:

- IITK: Only IITK Students can apply.
- NON-IITK: Only Indian students from various Indian Institution can apply.
- SAARC: Only students of SAARC countries (from Nepal, Bhutan) can apply.
(iii) Complete the registration form in all respects. An email indicating successful completion of registration of your online application will be sent on your registered email address containing login credentials.
Step 2: Payment of Registration Fee (Non-refundable) of Rs 750/- (only for NON-IITK students)
(i) Before going for payment process please go through the payment procedure LINK.
(ii) Please click on the State Bank Collect link to pay the Registration Fee.
(iii) After completion of payment please note down the Transaction ID and save the payment receipt in .pdf format for future reference.
PHASE-II: Complete the online Registration Form
(i) Go through this link: LINK and login with the credentials received in your registered email and complete the online registration form in all respect.
(ii) In Section-4 on your registration portal you need to enter the Transaction ID and upload the payment receipt in .pdf format (for Non-IITK students only).
(iii) Step by step complete all the 4 Sections on your registration portal including uploading of relevant documents. After final submission you will receive an email on your registered email-id intimating successful completion of online registration form along with the generated Application Number. Please quote the Application Number in all your future correspondence.
(iv) Registration will be considered complete only after receiving of the Registration Fee at our end.
- Incomplete/Incorrect applications will not be entertained and will be summarily rejected.
- Any attempt to influence the process will outrightly lead to disqualification of candidature.
- If the mentor/recommender wants to maintain the confidentiality of mentor/recommendation certificate then they can directly mail us the .pdf file of concerned certificate mentioning the Application number of the participant to [email protected]. In such case participant are requested to upload the blank pdf mentioning their recommender’s details.
