Scientists have harnessed the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to unlock the secrets of scents by examining molecular structures. Their discoveries are not only captivating but could potentially transform how we create new fragrances and deepen our comprehension of how our brains interpret smells.

Deciphering Scents with AI:

A team of researchers, led by neurobiologist Alexander Wiltschko, embarked on a quest to uncover how a molecule’s structure relates to its smell. They developed a neural network AI system capable of associating descriptive words like “fruity” or “grassy” with specific odorants.

The AI’s Mission:

The AI underwent training to describe around 5,000 odorants while also analyzing the chemical structures of these molecules. This analysis unveiled approximately 250 connections between specific structural patterns and particular scents. These correlations were organized into what the researchers referred to as a “principal odor map” (POM), essentially a reference guide the AI

could utilize to predict the scent of new molecules.

AI vs. Human Smell Test:

To put the AI’s capabilities to the test, 15 volunteers were trained to associate smells with the same descriptive words used by the AI. The researchers then introduced hundreds of odorants that don’t exist in nature but could still be described by humans. Both the volunteers and the AI were tasked with predicting the scent of these novel molecules based on their chemical structures.

Remarkably, the AI’s predictions often closely matched the average response provided by the human volunteers, and at times, even outperformed individual guesses.
