What is Analytical Chemistry?

Most of the materials that occur on Earth, such as air, minerals, coal, or wood, are mixtures of many different and distinct chemical substances. Each pure chemical substance, like water, oxygen, or iron has a characteristic set of properties that gives it its chemical identity. Analytical Chemistry and the sophisticated tools involved in it are required whenever there’s a need to identify a chemical.

The branch of chemistry that deals with the separation, identification, and quantification of chemical compounds is known as Analytical Chemistry. It involves the science of obtaining, processing, and communicating information regarding the structure and composition of matter. Analytical chemistry is the art and science of determining how much matter exists and what the matter. is The methods and instruments used to identify, separate, and quantify matter is studied and made use of in this branch of chemistry. In practice, the identification, separation, or quantification may be combined with another method or constitute the entire analysis. Analytical chemistry has provided methods for determining which chemicals and elements are present in a material/object/sample and thus has been important since the early days of chemistry.

Analytical chemistry is concerned with the chemical characterization of matter and the answer to the most important questions- what is it and how much is it. The basic questions about a material sample of What? Where? How much? and What structure, form, or arrangement? are answered using analytical chemistry.

Types of Analysis

  1. Qualitative Analysis: Performed to identify what analyte (a substance to be separated, determined, or identified in some manner) is present in a sample. The presence or absence of a particular compound is analyzed in qualitative analysis.
  2. Quantitative Analysis: Performed to determine how much of a material is present in a sample.

Analytes are identified in qualitative analysis, while the numerical amount or concentration is determined in quantitative analysis.

Techniques in Analytical Chemistry

Analytical chemistry consists of Modern Instrumental, Classical, and Wet Chemical methods.

  • Classical Techniques:

The roots of analytical chemistry and some of the principles used in modern instruments are from traditional classical techniques, although modern analytical chemistry is dominated by sophisticated instrumentation. The most common signals for classical techniques are mass, volume, and change. Classical qualitative methods use separations such as distillation, extraction, and precipitation. Based on differences in reactivity, radioactivity, boiling point, melting point, color, or order, the identification is carried out. Mass or volume changes are used to quantify amounts in classical quantitative analysis. Classical techniques involve Gravimetric techniques, Volumetric techniques, and Coulometric techniques.

  • Instrumental Techniques:

Instrumental techniques involve analysis using scientific instruments to investigate analytes. Instrumental methods may be used to separate samples using chromatography, electrophoresis, or feel flow fractionation, spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, thermal analysis, separation, hybrid techniques, etc. Instrumental techniques involve:

1. Spectroscopic Methods: These methods are used to measure the interaction between electromagnetic radiation (or the production of radiation by an analyte) and the analyte.

2. Electroanalytic Methods: These methods are used to measure an electrical property ( amperes, resistance, current, potential, etc.) chemically related to the amount of analyte.

Applications of Analytical Chemistry

Analytical chemistry used in many fields such as:

  • In the medical field, analytical chemistry is the basis for clinical laboratory tests that help physicians chart progress in recovery and diagnose disease.
  • In industry, it can help in assuring the quality of finished products whose chemical composition as it provides the means of testing raw materials. Making use of the procedures developed by analytical chemists, many household products, fuels, paints, pharmaceuticals, etc., before being sold to the consumer are analyzed.
  • Using the techniques of analytical chemistry, the quality of the environment is often evaluated by testing for suspected contaminants.
  • The chemical analysis determines the nutritional value of food for major components such as carbohydrates and protein and trace components such as minerals and vitamins. Additionally, chemical analysis is also used to calculate the calories in food.

They work in marketing and law; teach; design instruments used in the analytical analysis; perform process and product development; and conduct basic laboratory research. Analytical chemistry makes significant contributions to many fields of science and can be a challenging profession.
