Glenmark's Cholesterol lowering drugs

Glenmark Pharmaceuticals’ Simvastatin and Ezetimibe drugs for lowering high levels of Cholesterol in the blood received final approval from the US health regulator. The drugs are a generic version of Vytorin tablets by MSD International.

Bad cholesterol can cause fatty deposits in the blood vessels, increasing the risk of heart disease. The fatty deposits can make it difficult for the blood to flow through arteries, and sometimes the deposits can break and form a clot inside the blood vessel, causing a stroke or heart attack.

The United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) granted approval for Simvastatin and Ezetimibe tablets in the strengths of 10 mg/10 mg, 10 mg/20 mg, 10 mg/40 mg, and 10 mg/80 mg.

Simvastatin and Ezetimibe tablets are used in combination along with a proper diet to lower the bad cholesterol level and increase the good cholesterol level in blood. Ezetimibe reduces the amount of cholesterol body absorbs from the diet, and Simvastatin reduces the amount of cholesterol made by the liver. Along with a proper diet and the administration of Glenmark’s cholesterol lowering drugs, exercising and quitting smoking are also required for better results.

The Vytorin tablets’ market achieved annual sales of approximately USD 92.4 million for the 12-month period ended April 2019, said Glenmark, citing IQVIA sales data.

Currently, 157 products of Glenmark have been authorized for distribution in the US, and USFDA is yet to approve another 58 ANDAs.

On the BSE, Glenmark Pharma’s shares were trading 0.55 percent higher at Rs 450.80 apiece.

Glenmark Pharma is a Mumbai based company established in 1977 as a generic drug and active pharmaceutical ingredient manufacturer by Gracias Saldanha. Glenmark was the fifth biggest pharmaceutical company in India by 2008.

On Monday, the shares of Glenmark Pharma had risen by nearly 2%. On the counter, almost 423,479 shares changed hands.
