Role Summary

The Engineering Sciences group within Chemical Research and Development (CRD) in Chennai, India, seeks a computational chemist. CRD is part of Pfizer Research and Development (PRD) within the Pharmaceutical Sciences Small Molecule organization, responsible for developing process technology for manufacturing active pharmaceutical ingredients (API). CRD scientists and engineers are involved in all development phases, from small-scale synthesis in support of Discovery programs to developing the commercial synthetic route. CRD partners with manufacturing specialists for API synthesis in kilo-lab and pilot plant facilities and supports technology transfer to Pfizer manufacturing sites and third-party facilities.

The ideal candidate

will have a background in computational chemistry or physical organic chemistry. The candidate will support small molecule synthetic route development using state-of-the-art computational tools, applying them to challenges such as stereoselectivity, regioselectivity, reaction mechanisms, solvent effect analysis, and catalysis development. They will develop computational workflows and tools for use by experimental teams, closely interacting with interdisciplinary project team members and other members of the Computational Chemistry, Statistics, and Cheminformatics ecosystem. The candidate will access state-of-the-art hardware, software, and infrastructure support in a fast-paced, creative environment.

The Pfizer computational ecosystem is in a growth phase, and the selected candidate will enhance the impact of computational approaches within Pfizer through direct portfolio application and technology and tool development. This may involve advancing new technology in Quantum Mechanics, QSPAR modeling, and Machine Learning, among other areas. Qualifications

Experience: Good experience in computational chemistry and a solid foundation in physical organic chemistry.

Skills:

  • Assessing organic chemistry reaction mechanisms, including DFT calculations of intermediates and transition states, using modern computational chemistry software such as Gaussian, ORCA, and solvation models like COSMO-RS.
  • Developing and publishing computational workflow and tools for supporting process development.
  • Evolving skill sets with the growth of computational technology.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Desirable scientific programming experience, especially in Python.
  • Knowledge of data science, machine learning, and deep learning approaches.

Academic Background: Ph.D. or equivalent in Computational Chemistry, Chemistry, or Chemical Engineering.

Software Experience: Desired experience with implicit and explicit solvation models, Gaussian, ORCA/Weasel, COSMO-RS, RDKit.

Modeling: Desirable experience with calculating molecular descriptors or QSPR modeling.
