Job Details

  • Job Title: Assistant Editor
  • Location: Pune
  • Experience: Minimum 2 years in scientific publishing (at least 1 year in peer review or editorial roles).

Skills:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication in English.
  • Strong analytical and logical reasoning.
  • Subject matter expertise in STEM (Medicine, Life Sciences, or Physical Sciences).
  • Experience in manuscript handling preferred.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Medicine, Life Sciences, Physics, Chemistry, or HSS.
  • Prior experience in manuscript handling, especially within Transfers teams, is desirable.

Eligibility

Applicants should have completed at least 12 months in their current role before applying.

Purpose of the Role

The Assistant Editor plays a crucial role in managing the manuscript process from submission to acceptance. Responsibilities include conducting suitability checks, assigning Editorial Board Members (EBMs), communicating with authors and reviewers, and ensuring smooth workflow across the publishing pipeline. This position is key to maintaining journal quality, resolving queries, and supporting editors throughout the peer review process.

Key Responsibilities

1. Quality Checks and Suitability Assessment:

  • Conduct editorial checks to ensure manuscripts meet journal guidelines.
  • Verify authenticity to prevent paper mill or duplicate submissions.
  • Ensure all ethical and integrity standards are applied.
  • Confirm manuscripts align with the journal’s focus and scope.

2. Manuscript Pipeline Management:

  • Oversee the manuscript journey from submission to final decision.
  • Ensure all stages meet turnaround time (TAT) requirements.

3. Editor Assignment:

  • Assign handling editors based on subject expertise.
  • Monitor EBM engagement and take timely action to prevent delays.

4. Editor Support and Collaboration:

  • Provide ongoing support to editors during the peer review process.
  • Collaborate with editorial teams to enhance workflow efficiency.

5. Email Correspondence Management:

  • Handle professional communication among authors, reviewers, and editors.

6. Final Decision Assessment:

  • Review editor recommendations and professionally communicate final decisions.
  • Ensure all decisions comply with editorial guidelines.

7. Monitoring Review Progress:

  • Track manuscript progress and support timely completion.

8. Mentorship and Team Support:

  • Mentor new team members and assist with editorial process training.

9. Process Improvement:

  • Suggest improvements to workflows to reduce turnaround time and enhance efficiency.
