In this PhD Chemistry Jobs opportunity, you will provide characterization support on a wide variety of materials, material degradation, and contamination issues to determine the root cause of failures by working closely with cross-functional teams.

Role Description

As a Materials Engineer/Expert FTIR Spectroscopist under Apple Jobs, you will be responsible for conducting failure analysis on cross-functional projects involving different internal and external partners, ensuring projects are planned, well-executed, and delivered on time.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead FTIR-based failure analysis and characterization of adhesives, films, plastics, and polymer systems, specifically for organic and multi-component formulations.
  • Conduct detailed characterizations of polymers, adhesives, and films, analyzing material properties, interactions, and degradation mechanisms to identify root causes of failure.
  • Develop and execute experimental plans leveraging FTIR spectroscopy to solve complex material challenges with reliable results.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with material scientists and engineers to develop and execute multi-technique experimental plans.
  • Work closely with company-wide engineers, technical teams, and stakeholders to ensure alignment on project goals.
  • Utilize a broad range of IR analysis techniques (ATR, transmission, micro-spectroscopy) and perform skilled spectral interpretation with minimal reliance on automated libraries.
  • Engage specialists when additional expertise is required to achieve optimal outcomes.
  • Document and present results clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Contribute to the development of innovative FTIR and molecular analysis methodologies and best practices within the team.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 2+ years of industry experience in FTIR spectroscopy and failure analysis with a PhD in Chemistry, Polymer Science, Materials Science, or a related field.
  • Extensive experience in FTIR analysis of organic materials, polymers, adhesives, films, and plastics, particularly in failure investigation and degradation studies.
  • Strong expertise in polymer and adhesive science, with familiarity in consumer products and electronics components.
  • Proficiency in IR analysis techniques with accurate spectral interpretation skills.
  • Excellent communication skills to convey complex findings clearly.
  • Highly collaborative, curious, and solution-driven mindset.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background in consumer electronics materials with knowledge of common failure modes in polymers, adhesives, and plastic components.
  • 5+ years of industry experience.
