Fellowship
PhD
Students receive a monthly fellowship of Rs 37,000 (plus hostel accommodation or HRA, as applicable), which is enhanced to Rs 42,000 after registration.
I-PhD
Students receive a monthly fellowship of Rs 25,000 for the first year. At the end of the first year, upon satisfactory performance, the fellowship is enhanced to Rs 37,000 per month (further raised to Rs 42,000 after registration for PhD). If a student takes the MSc exit option, then the fellowship for the 3rd
year is reduced to the 1st year amount. All students (admitted to PhD/ I-PhD/ MSc programs) must submit a provisional or a final degree certificate as proof of having passed the qualifying examination, i.e. BSc/ BS/ BTech/ BE/ MSc/ MTech or equivalent, either at the time of joining, or at the latest by the end of the first academic year.
Provisional Admission
If no proof of passing is available at the time of joining, the student will be provisionally admitted, provided they submit a certificate from the Head of the previous Department/Institution stating that they have actually appeared for the qualifying examination and the results are still awaited. A student will not usually be permitted to join without any of these proofs; however, an exception can be made at the discretion of the Dean (GS). “Provisional admission” means that the student may join and begin academic activities.
Fellowship
Students who are provisionally admitted will not receive a fellowship until they submit a provisional or final degree certificate for the qualifying examination in their program. Once this is submitted, they will receive the full stipend appropriate for their program together with arrears from the date of the proof document (provisional/final degree certificate), or the date of joining, whichever is later.
Deadline
If the proof document is not submitted by the end of the first academic year, the student’s provisional admission will be terminated. Further extension(s) of this deadline may be granted at the discretion of the Director of TIFR or the Centre Director in extraordinary cases.
Termination
If their academic programme is terminated due to poor performance or any other reason (e.g., disciplinary) before the proof of passing is submitted, no arrears will be paid, and the student must leave the programme immediately.
