Details

  • Job Post: PhD Position
  • Location: South Goa, Goa, India

About the Job:

Applications

are invited for a Ph.D position on the project, “Artificial Intelligence control of a minijet-manipulated square turbulent jet” under the supervision of Prof. Shibu Clement, Prof. Aditya Challa, and Prof. Pritanshu Ranjan.

This position is applicable only to PhD aspirants. The candidates should check the eligibility criteria and qualification process of the PhD program of BITS Pilani.

Scope of Work:

This project aims to advance the understanding and control of square turbulent open jets manipulated by pulsed periodic radial minijets using AI. Key tasks include comparing round and square turbulent jets, optimizing minijet actuation parameters, and developing a real-time AI-controlled closed-loop system. The project will also involve formulating control laws for multiple actuators and conducting scaling analyses to relate control parameters to jet decay rates, ultimately enhancing mixing efficiency.

Essential Qualification: Post Graduate degree in Mechanical/Aerospace/Chemical from a recognized University with minimum 60% marks.

Desirable Qualification:

  • Basic knowledge of fluid mechanics and turbulence.
  • Experience or coursework in experimental and/or computational fluid dynamics (CFD).
  • Familiarity with programming languages like Python or MATLAB, or a willingness to learn them.
  • Basic knowledge of AI (PyTorch/TensorFlow) and control systems, or a willingness to learn them.
  • Interest in interdisciplinary research and a strong work ethic.

Fellowship: ₹37,000 – ₹42,000 per month (based on the year of PhD and performance)

Place of Work: BITS Pilani, K K Birla Goa Campus. Hostel accommodation may be provided subject to availability and according to the institute’s rules and regulations.

Benefits:

  • Deepening understanding of fluid dynamics and turbulence, particularly in controlling square turbulent jets with AI.
  • Developing expertise in AI and control systems by applying advanced algorithms in real-time scenarios.
  • Gaining practical experience through experimental setups and computational fluid dynamics simulations, enhancing interdisciplinary skills.

Application Process:

Please apply with a CV and a Cover letter (showing alignment and justification with the roles/responsibilities/requirements) via email to Prof. Shibu Clement (shibu@goa.bits-pilani.ac.in)

LAST DATE OF APPLICATION: 24 December 2025

Preliminary shortlisting will be based on resume, and short-listed candidates will be called for an online interview in the third week of May 2025.
