Job Description:
Unilever leads the market in the Skin Cleansing category, with a turnover of approximately €5 billion and consistent growth. The GDC Skin Cleansing B&H capability team, based in Mumbai and Bangalore, is responsible for global design for leading brands like Lux, Lifebuoy, and AXE.
The team focuses on developing new chassis with future surfactants to support Unilever’s sustainability goals related to NDPE and GHG, improving the value equation of existing products, and managing product specifications for manufacturing and quality.
This role is for a Research Associate/Product Development Work Stream Leader (1B) reporting to the R&D Global Product Development Manager. The Work Stream Leader (WSL) plays a crucial role in project execution and is accountable for completing key milestones On Time In Full (OTIF). Progress is reviewed regularly by the Line Manager/Technical Project Leader and monthly by the Group Director.
Key Accountabilities:

Develop and deliver product solutions based on scientific formulation principles.

Conduct lab and pilot plant trials, including stability studies, to scale product solutions for commercial manufacturing.

Collect, interpret, and document experimental data with accuracy.
-
Utilize relevant literature, patents, competition insights, and supplier information.
-
Prepare technical reports and presentations and document research findings.
-
Collaborate with global teams to integrate new technologies into products.
-
Use digital tools to enhance experimental efficiency and program delivery.
-
Ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and regulatory standards.
Key Interfaces:
The role requires collaboration with various global and regional stakeholders, including:

Development Managers, TPLs, MET Managers, Fragrance Managers, Finance, Supply Chain, Claims Managers, GDC and RDC Teams, R&D VPs, and GBVPs.

Strategic suppliers include Givaudan and Firmenich, Academia, Open Innovation, Procurement, and SERS.
Required Skills:

Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering or Master’s in Chemistry.

Basic knowledge of formulation science and material properties.

Strong understanding of formulations, colloidal & interfacial science.

Deep knowledge of surfactant chemistry, including carbon chain/head group effects on foam and viscosity.

Hands-on lab experience with formulation and performance evaluation equipment.

Proficiency in foam tests, surface tension measurements, and mildness assessments.
-
Knowledge of salt curves, viscosity building, polymers, and suspending mechanisms.
-
Understanding foamability differences among surfactants.
-
0–2 years of R&D experience, including internships.

Strong analytical, experimental design, and data interpretation skills.

Familiarity with digital tools and modeling

Excellent documentation, communication, and teamwork skills.
