The Role

As Shell

is embarking on a historical transformation towards net-zero emission future, Projects and Technology (P&T) and Analytical Technology within are facing greater than ever expansion of technologies, materials and knowledge to drive and support this energy transition. The Analytical Technology organization is well on its way transforming from a service organization to a true technology delivery partner for our main (Shell) customers in the past few years.

Where you fit

The global Elemental Analysis team part of Analytical Technology utilizes various analytical techniques to reveal the elemental composition of (in)organic samples and determine the physical properties of materials. The main techniques are based on but not limited to Combustion/Pyrolysis methodologies (Carbon, Hydrogen, Nitrogen etc. analyses) and Atomic Spectroscopy (such as Inductively Coupled Plasma – Mass Spectrometry, Inductively Coupled Plasma – Optical Emission Spectroscopy and X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometry). The analyses performed by the team range from routine analyses of elements such as Carbon, Hydrogen, Nitrogen, Sulfur, Oxygen based on international norms to the analyses of unknowns and the co-development of new experimental programs. The applications range from new energies, downstream, upstream, integrated gas as well as R&D programs in P&T. Creation of new methodologies, robotization, automatization and digitalization are key development areas of the team. These developments are aimed to create new capabilities and to ensure reliable, fast and cost-effective measurements.

What’s the role?

  • The Researcher in the Elemental team will be a technical expert in the global Elemental team who will be responsible for providing advanced technical solutions for elemental ensuring that innovative solutions are implemented to provide reliable, fast and cost-effective analytical measurements leveraging a variety of analytical techniques.
  • As a member of the Elemental team, the Researcher will be expected to partner with our (Shell) customers, understand their needs, leverage their broad and extensive Analytical Chemistry, in particular elemental, knowledge to provide cutting-edge solutions. With broad analytical knowledge, the successful candidate would be able to scout external emerging technologies as well as select appropriate hardware and develop a method for relevant Shell applications.
  • The Researcher will serve as an important resource in the department, not only in lab operations, problem-solving and lab safety, but also in guiding/mentoring less experienced staff in the global team.

Your further accountabilities are:

  • Supporting the R&D technical service delivery in the global elemental team for analyzing a broad range of materials in new energies, downstream, and upstream.
Provide technical expertise for the development, deployment and improvement of methods for elemental analysis as well leveraging other analytical techniques as needed.
  • Technical responsibility for method development, gate keeping, evaluation, and implementation of new capability for inorganic elemental.
Experience or interest in computational chemistry, digitalization and/or automation is a plus.
  • Experience in other analytical techniques in addition to deep expertise in Elemental analysis is a plus.
  • Manage multi-disciplinary global projects to ensure customers technical needs are met in timely and cost-effective manner.
  • Collaborate with local and global Analytical colleagues on complex multi-disciplinary problem- solving projects, and new project and R&D initiation and implementation.
Closely interact with internal customers, with high level of stake-holder engagement, identifying applications and contributing to business by own expertise including but not limited to contributing to R&D projects and understanding value to the business.
  • Design, develop, validate, deploy and maintain analytical instruments and methods as well as day-to-day hands-on work in the laboratory as well as supervision of laboratory staff performing testing, while paying close attention to safety and quality.
  • Monitor analytical technology developments outside of Shell and identify innovations with the potential to create value for Shell and collaborate in the Global Skill Network.
Mentor, train and guide less experienced staff in the inorganic elemental space.
