Hand Sanitizer By Manipur University Chemistry Department
There has been an increase in the demand for alcohol-based hand sanitizers and face masks ever since the first few cases of coronavirus were reported in India. Laying hands on such commodities has become difficult with the demand. There have also been cases of officials seizing fake hand sanitizers being produced due to scarcity.
The chemistry department of Manipur University Imphal decided to take a call amid the coronavirus outbreak and the demand for hand sanitizers. They decided to meet the demand of its varsity community and around 500 bottles of ethyl alcohol-based sanitizers were distributed to their community.
To aid the department in the production, 200 empty plastic bottles were acquired from a local company, during the first phase of the distribution of these sanitizers on March 19.
When the community approached the university, an additional 300 bottles were made of March 21 and distributed to them. The Head of the Department, Okhlam Mukherjee said that they have the resources to make more sanitizers and the research scholars are passionate. They also sent a few bottles to the All India Radio station employees as they had requested for hand sanitizers.
He said
, “We made hand sanitizers of 200 ml in each bottle and around 200 bottles of hand sanitizers, initially. To make the sanitizer in the laboratory, we used distilled water, glycerol, hydrogen peroxide, and ethyl alcohol (80 to 90 percent).”They will also make 1,000 more bottles of ethyl alcohol-based hand sanitizers.
As of March 26, India has around 735 confirmed coronavirus cases and the death toll is 15 deaths. The most number of confirmed cases in India is in the state of Kerala with 137 cases and Maharashtra has the second-highest number of cases in India with 125 confirmed cases. Cases have been reported in almost all the states in India excluding a few north-eastern states.
