Dow has an opportunity for a Process Automation Engineer to be based in Chennai, India. The role will require the individual to work within a global team responsible for the implementation of process control solutions to improve the operations of chemical plants associated with the Polyurethanes business. Plants are located in 4 world-continents.

The incumbent in this role will acquire a versatile and unique in Dow, acumen in PA and Manufacturing 4.0 technologies.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering or Instrumentation & Process Controls Engineering.
  • 3+ years of experience in Process automation project execution/plant improvement.
  • Production/Operations experience is considered as an asset but is not required.
    Strong foundation skills in Process Controls.
  • Knowledge and hands-on experience using Dow’s MOD5 and/or ABB 800xA.
    A good understanding of control system architecture / cloud-based systems.
  • Knowledge of global process automation and process safety standards, (ISA-S95, S88, and IEC 61511).
  • Knowledge of process data analysis tools is required like Aspen IP21, control loop performance applications etc.
  • Knowledge in commercial applications that are custom-built using software such as SQL, VBA, Python is an added advantage.
    Domestic and international travel would be required on an as-need basis (<25% of the time).
  • Must be willing to work on projects for different geographies/locations.
  • Fluency in written and oral communication English.

Job Description:

The Process Automation engineer serves as a competent technical resource for various capital and improvement projects regionally and/or globally. Is involved and responsible in the various phases of a Process Automation (PA+) / Control loop performance (CLPM) type projects: process data analysis, opportunity identification, scope development, direct hands-on control code implementation, and start-up. This position requires expanded conceptual and practical knowledge in own job discipline and broader capabilities.

The selected candidate for this position will align with Dow’s Technical Expertise & Support (TES) Process Automation Technology Group as a member of a global team of Process Automation Engineers serving Dow’s Polyurethanes Business.

Responsibilities / Duties

  • Responsible for tasks such as those listed below when chemical process, product or equipment or instruments are being added, removed, or changed. Responsible for the implementation of process automation solutions to capture improvement opportunities.
    The role involves completing pre-work as assigned by the PA/PA+/CLPM project lead.
  • Knowledge and experience in applying Dow’s PA+ toolsets to analyse plant performance – access and collect process data from plant systems, analyse data to identify process performance issues and generate improvement ideas.
  • Participate in stage-gate assessments and provide inputs on opportunity prioritization.
  • Executes scope development and recommends control strategies to improve specific process performance issues.
  • Designs control strategy around improvement opportunities as well as responsible for implementation, support/aftercare and long-term performance monitoring. This role is holistic, from initiating new process control improvement ideas, up to commissioning and operation of these solutions in the plants.
  • The individual is expected to be fully qualified and proficient in the application of chemical process control fundamentals.
  • The individual should be able to design and implement process control and process safety strategies for batch and continuous processes.
  • Assists and develops control application, operator graphics, and simulation applications especially using Dow MET platforms such as MOD5 and/or ABB 800xA.
  • Applies Global project methodology (GPM) and Dow’s PA/PA+ work process.
    Completes the acceptance test (FAT) related activities.
  • Provides training of operations and support commissioning and start-up activities (incl. controller tuning, process optimization).
  • Should have a good understanding of vertical integration with Level3 systems – Process Historians, Batch managers, and productions operations management (MOM).
    Engages with stakeholders and cross-discipline and cross-functional global teams.
  • Identifies and applies Most Effective Technology (MET) solutions to meet project requirements across the Polyurethanes business.
  • Should have a good understanding of control system hardware architecture and its integration with field systems and MES (Manufacturing execution systems).
    The individual is also expected to be part of global networks and hotline support (Leve2) for the running assets across different geographies.
  • The individual must be able to work with minimal supervision and be self-directed.
  • Role expansion is possible, as Dow is investing into innovative improvements capturing value of Manufacturing 4.0 technologies, especially suited for this specific Chemical Vertical.
