1.5 Lack Health And Wellness Centers To Be Created Under Ayushman Bharat By 2022

As part of Ayushman Bharat (AB), the government is planning to transform 1.5 lakh primary health centers and sub-health centers into health and wellness centers (AB-HWCs) by 2022 to implement the Comprehensive Primary Health Care (CPHC) plan.

States / UTs have been authorized to begin more than 62,000 AB-HWCs against the target of 40,000 AB-HWCs in the fiscal year 2019-20. According to the AB-HWC Portal, 29214 AB-HWCs are functional to date.

There had been four regional workshops in 2019 to orient states/UTs on the operationalization of AB-health and wellness centers (HWCs). To review the implementation of AB-HWCs, video conferences and regular meetings were also conducted.

States were provided with financial and technical support under the National Health Mission (NHM) to strengthen their primary healthcare system including the transformation of healthcare facilities to AB-HWCs, multi-skilling and capacity building of the existing primary healthcare workers, support for engaging required human resources, upgraded infrastructure, expanded range of medicines and diagnostics, inclusion of health promotion activities, digitization in terms of availability of tablets, desktops, use of telemedicine, information technology platforms, and additional financial resources as per the norms prescribed in the operational guidelines on Ayushman Bharat – Comprehensive Primary Health Care (AB-CPHC) through health

and wellness centers.

The National Health Policy (NHP) 2017 recommended the launch of a flagship scheme of Government of India, Ayushman Bharat, to achieve the vision of Universal Health Coverage (UHC). The initiative is designed to fulfill the SDG and its underlying commitment, “leave no one behind.”

The launch of Ayushman Bharat is an attempt to move from a segmented and sectoral approach to health care delivery to a comprehensive need-based health care service. Ayushman Bharat has brought a significant change in the way healthcare is delivered. The project aims to provide path-breaking interventions like universal health coverage that would address health at primary, secondary, and tertiary levels.
