Job Title: Researcher – Energy Systems Modeling

Elibgility Criteria: Masters or at least 2-3 years post PhD.

Furthermore, we would like to see the following skills and competencies:

  • PhD or MS/M. Tech degree in Chemical/Mechanical/Energy science and engineering or similar discipline with a strong computational modeling background; specialization in energy systems modeling, renewable energy systems, simulation of microgrids, optimal control strategy, physics-based systems level design, and optimization.
  • Knowledge of setting up complex problems in optimization (including MILP, NLP) framework and modeling of renewable energy systems is a must.
  • Deep knowledge of engineering areas: renewable energy systems, heat and power systems, power flow modeling and optimization, etc. with skill level expertise.
  • Relevant publications in Internationally reputed journals and Conference Proceedings are an advantage.
  • Expertise in MATLAB, Python, C, and other Programming languages. Experience in using any optimization framework like Pyomo, AIMMS, or in Matlab and advanced knowledge of different optimization solvers.
  • Sound understanding of Systems Engineering and Systems Thinking principles.
  • A team player with good oral and written communication skills.

Your further responsibilities include:

  • You will be responsible for independently carrying out R&D/Asset support projects in systems modeling covering many of the above technical areas, developing in-house codes as needed, running of Shell proprietary codes and relevant commercial tools.
  • Reporting of the technical results and insights through reports and presentations that is actionable for the customer and supporting the customer in implementing the solution.
  • You will need to interface with stakeholders well within and outside Shell for bringing in problems worth solving from diverse lines of businesses, apply systems thinking to scope and develop required technology solutions, and finally deploy & replicate the solution with our internal and external customers to deliver commercial value.
  • Execution of R&D programs in the field of systems modeling including tracking progress against milestones and agreed deliverables.
  • You will need to keep an eye on and leverage external trends to bring cutting-edge digital innovation in this space.
  • Carrying out all activities with safety as the priority (Goal Zero).

What is the Role?

As a Researcher of Energy Systems Modeling, you will be a key player in growing the niche capability of Future Energy Systems to enable Shell’s ambition of powering progress together with low carbon energy options. You are expected to contribute significantly through

  • development and use of Energy Systems Models for helping technology strategy and business development teams in Shell and for our external customer to create a business roadmap, take various strategic decisions which include capital investment decisions for new energy assets, sizing of an asset to meet power demand, technologies for power generation and storage, for future power-to-X value chains, assessing key trade-offs and breakthroughs
  • creating systems-level models at plant(s) level and investigating decarbonization choices and strategies for hard-to-abate sectors through a broader understanding of industrial processes
  • techno-economic analysis of renewable energy technologies, including Carbon Capture, Utilization, Storage, H2, energy storage systems etc.
  • Demonstrating strong systems thinking mindset while working with customers and stakeholders to understand and visualize complex systems and value chain.
  • In this role, you will work as an individual contributor but would give immense opportunities to collaborate with various other R&D and engineering teams and businesses in Shell across the globe.
  • A few opportunities would include H2, Offshore Wind, Electrification, E-mobility, electrification of large industrial assets, and external customers to provide decarbonization solutions for hard-to-abate sectors including mining, marine, cement, and manufacturing (steel, cement, aluminum, etc.) and many more. This role reports to the Manager of Systems modeling in Shell Technology Center Bengaluru.
