Project Synopsis

The aim of the project is to identify and study organic ferroelectric materials using experimental and computational techniques. The major objectives are:

Objectives

  • Design, synthesis and characterization of novel single-component purely organic hydrogen-bonded ferroelectric materials.
  • Detailed structural analysis based in the presence and absence of electric field using X-ray and neutron diffraction data.
  • Measuring electrical properties for the evaluation of dielectric characteristics and spontaneous and remnant polarization.
  • Charge density analysis using high-resolution X-ray and neutron diffraction data for mapping the proton transfer pathway along the hydrogen bonds.
  • Theoretical estimation of molecular and in-crystal dielectric and spontaneous polarization.
  • Discover potential purely-organic ferroelectrics for future applications in organic microelectronics

Nature of work

Discovery of purely organic

ferroelectric materials via design, synthesis, crystallization and structural, spectroscopic, thermal, electrical characterizations techniques. Calculation of ferroelectric properties. High-resolution experiments for structural and charge density studies using X-ray and neutron diffraction. The project comprises of two major components,

(i) detailed structural characterizations and

(ii) electrical measurements in its bulk, thin-film and single-crystal forms. For further details, please refer to: Chem. Commun., 2019, 55, 9610 – 9613.
