Aurobindo Pharma to develop COVID19-vaccine in collaboration with Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC).

Aurobindo Pharma through its US subsidiary, Auro Vaccines is in the process of developing a vaccine for the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Aurobindo Pharma announced on Tuesday about a collaboration BIRAC. The council funded by the Department of Biotechnology ties up with the pharma company to develop and manufacture the SARS-CoV-2 virus vaccine.

BIRAC for the very first time in India has facilitated the establishment of the production platform for ‘rVSV vaccine’ by supporting Aurobindo Pharma’s COVID-19 vaccine development, mentioned in the regulatory filing.

The candidate vaccine is established on the basis of a proprietary vaccine delivery platform of Aurobindo Pharma.

Aurobindo is processing to establish a state-of-art manufacturing facility. This facility would primarily focus on the manufacturing of viral vaccines, including the COVID-19 vaccine. The development of COVID-19 is going as per the plan of the company, which complies with the global standards, added the filing.

N Govindarajan, Managing Director, Aurobindo Pharma commented on the collaboration of the company with BIRAC. He said that it is a matter of immense pride for them that BIRAC has put their trust in the vaccine development capabilities of the company

. He added about the extensive experience in designing, manufacturing, and commercialization of several vaccines under the senior leadership of Aurobindo and Auro Vaccines

Renu Swarup, Secretary, Department of Biotechnology, and BIRAC chairperson, said that the collaboration of BIRAC with Aurobindo aims to serve the vaccine requirement of the country to defeat the present pandemic.

Swarup added that the focus of the government is to create an ecosystem that encourages and nurtures innovation of new products that would address the most relevant issues of our society, added Swarup.

Among the firms working in India on the coronavirus vaccine includes Bharat Biotech, Serum Institute, Indian Immunologicals, Zydus Cadila, Mynvax, Panacea Biotec, and Biological E.
