Professor Biman Bagchi from IISc bags US chemistry award

A 66-year-old scientist from the Indian Institute Of Science (IISc) – Professor Biman Bagchi has been selected as the 2021 recipient of the Joel Henry Hildebrand Award in theoretical and experimental chemistry of liquids.

Officials from the institute said that this is a distinguished award in the field of liquids and glasses – The ACS (American Chemic Society) national awards program is aimed to support research study in chemical science and industry and to encourage the improvement of chemistry in all its branches.

Professor Biman Bagchi is a biophysical and theoretical chemist and also an Amrut Mody Professor at the solid-state and structural chemistry lab at IISc, known for his studies on statistical mechanics, and CSIR awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology for his contributions to chemical science.

Professor Bagchi pursued his graduation in chemistry from Kolkata’s Presidency University in 1974, and did his master’s in chemistry from Calcutta University in 1976, then in 1980, he completed his Ph.D. from Brown University, later from James Franck Institute of the University of Chicago, he did his post-doctoral studies.

In 1984, professor Bagchi joined IISc as a lecturer

, where the Bagchi research team was established by him.

G. Rangarajan, Director of IISc congratulated professor Bagchi for being selected for this prestigious award.

Felicia Foxworth Dixon, senior manager of ACS said while announcing the selection in Washington DC, that the award would certainly be presented to Bagchi on March 23, 2021, at the society’s spring 2021 national meeting and expo in San Antonio.

The August issue of “Chemical & Engineering News, C&En News and twitter handle of ACS will announce the names of the 2021 ACS national honor receivers.

This prestigious award was received by chemistry professors Bob Zwanzig, Casey Hynes, and Hans Andersen in the past.

Dixon said that the ACS awards are made to encourage the innovation of chemistry in all its branches, to promote the careers of chemists, and to sustain research study in chemical science and industry.
