Pharmacist Strike In Delhi

Pharmacists from government and private sectors will be stepping up preparations for a national level joint strike at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on 29th November 2019, urging the Union government to refrain from the proposed amendment of Schedule K of the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules 1945.

As the Parliament session has started on Monday, pharmacists have decided to prepone the strike from December 1 to November 29.

Pharmacists from across the country will assemble at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi on 29th November 2019 for the agitation.

In support of pharmacists’ demands, various professionals with pharmacy backgrounds from allied sectors, industries, & teaching institutions are likely to join the agitating pharmacists to safeguard the pharmacy profession, according to a national leader of agitating pharmacists.

Bhupendra Kumar, general secretary of Indian Pharmacists Association, said the IPA would make the arrangements for the agitation at Jantar Mantar and one thousand members within the National Capital Territory of Delhi representing IPA will attend the protest strike.

The pharmacists association has vehemently opposed the government’s decision to allow nurses, ASHA, and Anganwadi workers to supply drugs.

The pharmacist association has threatened to go on an indefinite strike if the decision

is not withdrawn.

On November 06, the union health ministry had issued a notification considering community health officers, nurses, ASHA, Anganwadi workers can supply drugs. The health ministry has asked the stakeholder to give their suggestions and objections within 45 days.

Pharmacist associations from different parts of the country will send representatives to New Delhi for the strike. These include Assam Hospital Pharmacists Association (AHPA), Tamil Nadu Government Pharmacist Association (TNGPA), ESIC pharmacists association New Delhi, Pharmacy Association of Andhra Pradesh (PAAP), Telangana Government Pharmacists Association (TGPA) among others.
