Notice for Admission to the Integrated MSc-PhD Program of NISER, 2026-27

Online applications are invited from Indian citizens for admission to the Integrated MSc-Ph.D. program scheduled to commence from August 2026 in the following schools of NISER, Bhubaneswar:

  • School of Biological Sciences (SBS)
  • School of Chemical Sciences (SCS)
  • School of Mathematical Sciences (SMS)
  • School of Physical Sciences (SPS)

Eligibility

School Minimum Educational Qualifications
Biological Sciences A bachelor’s degree in any branch of Biology/Life Sciences or any equivalent professional degree such as B.Pharm/B.V.Sc/B.Sc(Ag) /M.B.B.S /B.E. /B.Tech., from a university recognized by UGC with minimum 60% marks aggregate or equivalent grade points (*CGPA/GPA, etc.).
Chemical Sciences A Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Sciences or an equivalent degree with Chemistry as one of the main subjects from a university recognized by UGC with a minimum 60% marks aggregate or equivalent grade points (CGPA/GPA, etc.).
Mathematical Sciences A Bachelor’s or an equivalent degree from a University or Institution recognized by UGC with a minimum 55% in aggregate or equivalent grade points (CGPA/GPA, etc.).
Physical Sciences A Bachelor’s degree in Physical Sciences or an equivalent degree with Physics as one of the main subjects, or B.E/B.Tech degree from a university/institution recognized by UGC with minimum 60% marks aggregate or equivalent grade points (CGPA/GPA, etc.).

*Candidates with CGPA/GPA in a qualifying degree may need to produce the conversion note (in case it is not mentioned in their mark sheet) from their institution for the calculation of percentage.

Candidates who are appearing for their final examination for a Bachelor’s Degree can also apply, provided they submit an undertaking that they will submit the Qualifying degree certificates by the time of admission into the program.

Requirement of Qualifying a National Level Examination

  • School of Biological Sciences – Candidates should have qualified in any one of the following national-level examinations: JAM 2026/GATE score valid for the academic year 2026-27/CSIR-UGC NET or equivalent. Applications will be shortlisted for an interview at NISER Bhubaneswar based on marks/rank/score obtained in the national-level qualifying examination.
  • School of Chemical Sciences – Candidates should have qualified for at least one of these National Level Examinations: JAM, valid for the academic year 2026-2027.
  • School of Mathematical Sciences – Candidates should have qualified in one of the following examinations: JAM 2026, NBHM Master’s/Ph.D. Scholarship 2026 written examination (a copy of the call letter from NBHM to appear for the interview has to be produced).
  • School of Physical Sciences – Candidates should have qualified in one of the following examinations: JAM/JEST, valid for the academic year 2026-2027.

Fellowship

Institute fellowship is as follows:

  • First year of the program: ₹25,000/- per month.
  • Second and third year: ₹37,000/- per month, subject to continuation of the fellowship.
  • During the PhD tenure of the program (4th-7th year): ₹42,000/- per month.

Selection Procedure

  • The selection committee of the respective schools will shortlist the candidates from the applications received by the deadline. Merely satisfying the minimum qualifications does not guarantee shortlisting. The schools may set additional criteria as deemed necessary.
  • The short-listed candidates will be called for an interview, supplemented by a written test, if necessary, for admission.
  • Based on the academic record and the performance of the candidates in the selection process, the selection committee will recommend candidates for admission to the Integrated MSc-PhD program.
  • All eligible candidates called for the Test / Interview will be reimbursed the return travel fare equivalent to second-sleeper class railway fare by the shortest route from their place of residence to the Institute upon production of valid documents.

How to Apply

  • The applicant must apply online through the NISER website (Online Portal), following the stepwise instructions mentioned therein to complete the application submission process. Successful submission of the online application is entirely the candidate’s responsibility. NISER will not bear any liability for an incomplete application or non-submission of any required supporting document.
  • Candidates intending to apply for more than one school must fill out separate online application forms for each school with appropriate supporting documents.
  • NISER does not demand any application fee from the candidates who apply for the Integrated MSc-PhD program.

Important Dates

  • The online application portal will be activated on 1st April 2026
  • Last date for filling up online application – 30th April 2026
  • The short-listed candidates’ list will be uploaded on the NISER website – 6th – 8th May 2026
  • Tentative dates for test/interview are as follows:
    • School of Biological Sciences: 2 – 3 June 2026
    • School of Chemical Sciences: 22 – 23 June 2026
    • School of Mathematical Sciences: 17 – 19 June 2026
    • School of Physical Sciences: 11 – 12 June 2026
  • Each school will send the call letters to the candidates separately. Kindly refer to the website for the announcement of the selected candidates.
  • The Integrated MSc-PhD first semester registration is scheduled to be held on 31st July 2026, and classes commence on 3rd August 2026.

Checklist for Application Submission

During online submission, you will need to have the following ready with you for uploading;

• JPEG file of your passport-size photo.
• JPEG file of your valid signatures.
• Birth Certificate/10th pass certificate in support of date of birth.
• Certificate and mark sheets in support of passing the eligibility examination, i.e., Bachelor’s degree.
In case the original pass certificate is not issued, upload the last/previous semester marksheet.
Also, a certificate from the degree-issuing university, on its letterhead with the seal of the concerned
authority, should be produced certifying the completion of all the requirements for the award of
the degree at the time of interview (if called for an interview).
• Certificate/document in support of qualifying national level examination(s), viz. JEST/JAM/CSIRUGC NET/GATE/NBHM or any other as applicable.
