About the Indian Institute of Science (IISc)
The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, is India’s premier research university and a global leader in advanced science and engineering. Through IISc recruitment, the institute offers high-impact Project Associate jobs for candidates seeking MSc Chemistry jobs, doctoral research exposure, and research opportunities to translate academic innovation into industrial-scale solutions.
About the Role
- Job Post: Project Associate — Peptide Production Platform
- Primary Location: Peptide Engineering Lab, MBU @ IISc (Academic Research)
- Secondary Location: Leumas, Bengaluru (Technology Translation)
- Email: jayanta@iisc.ac.in
- Subject: “Project Associate — Peptide Production Platform”
Overview
This role is structured as a sponsored research opportunity anchored at the Peptide Engineering Lab, MBU, with a defined pathway to translate validated chemistry & processes into production-scale manufacturing at Leumas. The position is ideal for recent post-graduates, early-career PhD scientists
, or post-doctoral researchers interested in applied peptide chemistry who want to work deeply on synthesis and analytical development in an academic setting, and then participate in the translation of that work into real-world manufacturing systems.Lab Overview
Led by Dr. Jayanta Chatterjee, the Peptide Engineering Lab at MBU focuses on peptide modification and structure–function engineering, with expertise in thioamide chemistry, N-methylation, cyclic peptides, antimicrobial peptides, hormones, and mini-proteins. This work generates well-characterized chemistries and process insights that can be subsequently translated into scalable, reproducible manufacturing workflows in collaboration with industry partners such as Leumas.
The Role
You will contribute to the development, validation, and documentation of peptide synthesis approaches in an academic lab environment, and subsequently support the engineering translation of those approaches into scalable, reproducible manufacturing systems.
What You’ll Own
Project & Timeline Ownership
- Overall timeline and project ownership, including liaison with IISc lab, sponsors, and internal Leumas engineering team.
- Technology roadmap ownership through the committed deadline.
- Milestone tracking, risk management, and delivery accountability.
Lab Work & Technical Development
- Hands-on peptide synthesis and chemistry experimentation
- Route exploration, optimization, and reproducibility studies
- Analytical method development and characterization
- Experimental documentation, reports, and project summaries
- Participation in internal lab discussions and reviews related to the project
Technology Translation & Manufacturing
- Translate validated lab-scale chemistry into process concepts suitable for manufacturing
- Support conversion of synthesis steps into structured process flows and documentation
- Work with engineering teams to align chemistry with equipment and automation constraints
- Assist in pilot-scale trials, process troubleshooting, and iteration
- Prepare technical notes, translation briefs, and manufacturing-ready documentation
Documentation & Regulatory
- Documentation and marketing material preparation.
- Analytical testing and dossier preparation.
- Liaison with sponsors for grants and documentation.
Eligibility
- Post-graduate, PhD, or Post-doc with hands-on synthesis and medicinal chemistry experience (peptide chemistry, analytical methods, synthetic route optimization).
- You’ve bridged lab research and manufacturing before; you understand the gap between bench-scale synthesis and production-ready processes.
- You’re a builder and project owner, not just a protocol executor; you design systems, manage timelines, coordinate stakeholders, and own outcomes.
- You’re hands-on but strategic: comfortable doing lab work yourself AND owning roadmaps, managing cross-functional teams, and ensuring commercial readiness.
- You thrive in complexity: Multiple project stakeholders, tight deadlines, and ambiguity.
- You translate chemistry into execution: turn complex synthesis into clear process docs, technical dossiers, and manufacturing briefs—while holding hard lines on feasibility and timelines.
- Bonus: Peptide synthesis, GMP/cGMP environments, or pharma tech transfer.
Why Join
- Real end-to-end ownership. Own project from technical development through scale-up manufacturing readiness, and commercial launch. This isn’t a staff scientist role — you’ll define how pharma platforms get built.
- World-class research partnership. Direct collaboration with Peptide Engineering Lab at IISc MBU — one of India’s leading research groups in peptide chemistry.
- Build from first principles. Design production platforms from scratch, translate cutting-edge IISc research into manufacturing reality, and create the playbook for pharma platforms at a software-defined CRDMO.
- Career trajectory + meaningful equity. This role can evolve into Program Manager – Pharma Platforms or equivalent roles as we expand capabilities and product lines.
