Job Overview
The R&D Specialist/Scientist will be responsible for formulating, testing, and optimizing new and existing personal care products. This role requires a blend of scientific expertise, creativity, and problem-solving skills to develop high-performance, market-ready formulations that align with client needs and industry trends.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct thorough research, develop innovative formulations, and reformulate existing skincare, cosmetic, and oral care products, including creams, serums, cleansers, makeup, toothpaste, and more.
- Perform rigorous stability testing, compatibility assessments, and comprehensive performance evaluations of developed formulations.
- Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including Marketing, Production, and Quality Assurance, to ensure the feasibility and scalability of product formulations.
- Stay consistently updated on the latest industry trends, emerging new ingredients, and evolving regulatory requirements (e.g., FDA, ISO, COSMOS, ECOCERT).
- Source and critically evaluate raw materials, active ingredients, and preservatives based on their efficacy, safety profiles, and cost-effectiveness.
- Maintain meticulous documentation of all R&D processes, including detailed batch records, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and comprehensive technical reports.
- Provide valuable assistance in troubleshooting production-related issues that may arise due to formulation challenges.
- Ensure strict compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), ISO standards, and other relevant quality regulations.
Qualifications & Skills
Hard Skills:
- Possess a strong foundational knowledge of cosmetic chemistry, emulsion systems, surfactants, and rheology modifiers.
- Experience working with formulation software (e.g., Chemistrix, SimSol) is considered a significant plus.
- Demonstrate proficiency in various laboratory techniques, including HPLC, FTIR, viscosity testing, and pH adjustment.
- Familiarity with relevant regulatory guidelines such as FDA and EU Cosmetics Regulation is essential.
Soft Skills:
- Exhibit an Innovative & Creative approach, with the ability to think outside conventional boundaries to develop unique and effective formulations.
- Demonstrate a strong Detail-Oriented nature, with meticulous attention to documentation and testing protocols.
- Possess excellent Collaborative skills, with the ability to work effectively with marketing, production teams, and suppliers.
- Display strong Problem-Solving abilities, capable of effectively troubleshooting formulation and stability issues.
Education & Certifications
- Hold a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemistry, Cosmetic Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related scientific field.
- Additional relevant certifications, such as a Diploma in Cosmetic Science or Regulatory Affairs, are considered advantageous.
Preferred Experience
- Possess 3-5 years of hands-on experience in R&D formulation within the skincare, cosmetics, or oral care industries.
- Prior experience with private label manufacturing is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of natural and organic formulations is considered a bonus.
