JOB PURPOSE:

As an assistant research scientist in the Advanced Materials team, you can bring leading edge science to the innovation of our next generation of Clean Future products through which we will deliver our bold new mission ‘to turn ordinary chores into extraordinary moments that don’t cost the earth’.

Responsibilities:

• Materials Expertise: Apply expertise in surface, interfacial and colloidal sciences, and materials chemistry to develop tangible leads and technical cleaning solutions. Stay updated with the latest advancements.

• Hypothesis Development: Independently develop and test hypotheses to enhance Home Care formulations by understanding chemical interactions.

• Experimental Design & Execution: Design and conduct experiments, working closely with formulation and materials teams to convert insights into actionable innovations.

• Capability Building: Mentor junior chemists, support capability building in interfacial and colloidal science, and continue personal development as Assistant Research Scientist.

• Internal Collaboration: Work with AMSS platform leads and other S&T teams to translate new materials into commercially viable products.

• External Collaboration: Take the lead in building relationships with external formulation chemistry and material synthesis experts.

• Program Management: Support the Platform Leader in managing external research programs focused on Home Care formulation.

• Data Analysis & Presentation: Analyze and communicate findings, especially in relation to detergent component interactions. Proficiency with digital modeling tools is essential.

Qualifications & Experience for Assistant Research Scientist:

• Bachelor’s in Chemical Engineering or Master’s in Chemistry with at least 5 years of industry or academic experience in Formulations & Interface Science.

• Hands-on experience in delivering new material solutions for Home Care.

Expertise Includes:

• Deep knowledge in colloids, interfacial science, phase behavior, material chemistry, and formulation across Home Care.

• Understanding ingredient interactions affecting performance, stability, and sustainability.

• Strong background in mentoring, hypothesis-driven research, and converting leads to consumer-ready solutions.

• Familiarity with manufacturing processes and ingredient compatibility.

• Active collaboration with academic, industrial, and cross-functional Unilever teams.

Skills for Assistant Research Scientist:

• Interfacial Phenomena: Expertise in characterizing surfactants, surface tension, and contact angles.

• Stain Forensics: Understanding stain-substrate interactions and quantifying stain removal efficacy.

• Ingredient Interactions: Knowledge of phase behavior, surfactant-polymer synergies, and enzyme interaction with actives.

• Metal Ion Chelation: Skills in chelation and its effect on colloidal properties.

• Data Management: Capture and structure data effectively using appropriate digital tools.

• Modeling Tools: Apply digital models for fast, agile formulation insights.

• Science Communication: Translate complex science for varied audiences.

• Collaboration: Manage diverse partner networks—from suppliers to academia.
